Dr Mark Bronsvoort

Background

I qualified as a veterinary surgeon from Bristol University, UK, in 1988 and initially worked in dairy practice in Cumbria followed by a short period in small animal practice in Birmingham and Derby. I then spent 18 months travelling, trekking and photographing my way around Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

On returning to the UK I worked as a locum and completed a Masters in Ecology before taking a research assistant position with the School of Tropical Medicine in Liverpool. This position was based in Cameroon managing a WHO funded drug screening programme for onchocerciasis. While there I developed an interest in epidemiology and in 1998 was awarded a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship in Clinical Tropical Epidemiology.

As part of my fellowship I completed the Masters in Preventive Veterinary Medicine at University of California, Davis, USA and then worked on the epidemiology of foot-and-mouth disease in the Adamawa Province of Cameroon. After graduation in 2003 I worked as a consultant for the Danish Bacon and Meat Council based at the EpiLab in Denmark working on a risk assessment for exotic disease introduction into the swine industry. I currently hold a position as lecturer in Veterinary Epidemiology at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.

I continue to work in Africa on the epidemiology of foot-and-mouth disease, as well as on aspects of brucellosis, leptospirosis and Q fever. My research and applied interests are in diagnostic test evaluation, risk assessment, disease surveillance and decision support systems.CameroonSampling FMD
